Our link with the Parish of St. Crispin's, Bungoma
The Diocese of Peterborough is linked with the Diocese of Bungoma in Kenya, East Africa. It is located in Western Kenya and partly lies adjacent to Uganda, bordered by the massif of Mount Elgon in the north, the third highest mountain in Kenya. The area is very fertile, producing abundant crops of maize, sugar and coffee, but many of the population live at a subsistence level on the produce from their dwelling landholdings.
The aim of the link is to create two-way relationships between churches, schools and other organisations in the two Dioceses. Through these links, we can:
- Pray for each other
- Meet people from different cultures
- Build person to person relationships
We are also able to provide financial support for specific projects being run by our linked churches and schools in Bungoma.
Here at St. Benedict's, we have a long standing link with the Parish of St. Crispin's in Bungoma Town. Through this link, we have helped St. Crispin's fund the running costs of a vehicle that is used by the Parish and the Diocese to reach out to and support the people in local towns and villages. In September 2007, Anne England (a member of our congregation) visited Bungoma and the Parish of St. Crispin's as part of a trip organised by Peterborough Diocese. At the time of her visit, St. Crispin's church was being re-built. It is now nearing completion.
In January 2012, our curate - Reverend Marcus Purnell - visited Bungoma and, had an opportunity to meet with the leaders and people of the Parish of St. Crispin's. Please pray for the re-energising of our link with St. Crispin's and for the two-way opportunities for spiritual growth and Christian fellowship that the link offers.
And, here is just a small selection of the photographs that Anne took during her 2007 trip.
